How to Use Discounting as Part of a Business Profit Plan
A discount is not a strategy just because it brings in work this week.
The Purpose-Built Playbook includes discounting programs in a deliberate allocation of marginal contribution to drive increased sales and break-even. The key word is deliberate. If discounting is a knee-jerk reaction to slow sales, you may move revenue without improving the business.
Start With the Objective
What is the discount meant to accomplish? If you cannot answer that, you are not running a program. You are reacting. A controlled business ties the move to a defined target and a point in the operating plan.
Know What the Contribution Must Support
The playbook does not isolate sales from the rest of the machine. Marginal contribution may support efficiency, utilization, productivity, discounting, and then profit. That means the decision has a place in a sequence rather than living as a random sales tactic.
Do Not Let Revenue Hide the Result
More sales can feel like relief. But relief is not the same as profit. The owner still needs to know how the program affects break-even, contribution, and the bottom line.
Before the next discount leaves the building, decide what it is there to produce.
